Requirement
4.4.2.2. Skippers and mates must not sit on a board in their own ship
Required Often forgotten
A composition rule, and the one most easily misread: it bars them from being members of the board. It does not bar them from the room, and 4.4.2.4 says explicitly that they may serve as the two required adult advisors.
Notes and warnings
Warning. The two sentences that look like a contradiction and are not. Skippers and mates must not serve on a board of review for a Sea Scout in their own ship (4.4.2.2), and the Skipper and mates may fulfil the two-adult advisor responsibility at an Apprentice through Able board (4.4.2.4). Both are in the Guide. They agree because an advisor is not a member of the board. A ship that reads only the second sentence ends up with the Skipper on the board.
