"Get approval before you start"

Requirement 1 in full is: Present evidence that you have cared for a pet for four months. Get approval before you start.

Read the second sentence as the condition it is. The four months run from the approval, not from whenever you happened to get the animal. Years of devoted care given before you spoke to a counselor do not count towards this requirement, however unfair that feels. The requirement is written to make the four months deliberate and observed rather than remembered.

So the first action on this badge is a conversation, and the badge cannot be finished sooner than four months after it.

The same animal cannot earn two badges

Note: Work done for other merit badges cannot be used for this requirement.

The obvious collision is Dog Care, whose requirement 4 is two months of keeping and caring for your dog, and which carries the same restriction from its own side, applied to its whole badge. Two clocks, two sets of evidence, and one dog cannot run both at once.

That is not a reason to avoid either badge. It is a reason to sequence them.

Requirement 4: the animal usually chooses

Some pets can do neither obvious thing and some can do both. Whichever way it falls, settle it early: 4(b) is training that takes weeks, and 4(a) is somebody else's calendar.

Requirement 3 is easier if it comes second

Requirement 2 asks for 200 words or more on the care, feeding and housing of your pet, plus interesting facts and the local laws that apply to it. Requirement 3 asks you to read a book or pamphlet about your kind of pet, approved by your counselor, and discuss what you learned.

They are numbered 2 then 3. The reading is what makes the writing good, and the approval on the reading is a second thing to raise with your counselor early, so ask about the book at the same conversation where you get requirement 1 approved.

The 2025 requirements book offers a third option at requirement 4: Start a friend raising a pet like yours. Help your friend get a good start. It is not on the current page.
