Dog Care Merit Badge

One requirement out of ten is two months long

Requirement 4 asks you to keep and care for your dog for two months and keep a log of nine things:

• feeding schedule
• types of food used
• amount fed
• exercise periods
• training schedule
• a weekly body weight record
• grooming and bathing schedules
• veterinary care, if necessary
• costs plus a description of your dog's housing or shelter arrangements. Eight or nine weight entries, taken a week apart. There is no way to produce that at the end from memory, and no way to shorten it.

The log records things requirement 6 explains

Requirement 6 covers vaccination schedules, flea and tick and heartworm and worm control, dental care, grooming, seasonal conditions and spaying or neutering. Requirement 8 is a visit to a veterinary hospital or an animal shelter.

Both are numbered after the two-month log and both are about what should be in it. Read requirement 6 and make the requirement 8 visit early, with your questions written down, and the log gets easier and better at the same time.

The badge needs a dog

Requirement 2 is the only one that offers an alternative. Everything else that needs an animal needs an actual one, and requirement 4 needs it for two months. If the dog is not yours, that is a conversation to have with whoever's it is before you start, not in week six.

Work here cannot count anywhere else, and that rule just grew

A note above requirement 1 reads: The activities used to fulfill the requirements for the Dog Care merit badge may not be used to help fulfill the requirements for other merit badges.

In the 2025 requirements book that sentence is a parenthesis at the end of requirement 4, and applies to requirement 4. On the current page it has been lifted out and applied to all ten requirements.

The badge it most obviously collides with is Pets, whose requirement 1 is four months of caring for a pet and carries the same restriction from its own side. Two months of dog care and four months of pet care are two separate clocks, and the same dog cannot run both.

Requirement 5 asks for three of eight

"come," "sit," "down," "heel," "stay," "fetch," "get it," "drop it". Show any three, with your dog. The 2025 book prints the same list as seven, treating fetch and get it as one alternative. Any three either way.
