Note. APPEAL AND FUNCTION ARE TWO ANSWERS, NOT ONE. Appeal is the easy half: colour, shape, scale, what looked good together and at what time of year. Function is what the planting was DOING, and it is the half that gets left out. Trees shade seating, shelter a path and hide a car park. Shrubs divide a space without walling it, screen a bin store, keep people off a corner, and mark where you are meant to turn. Ground covers hold a bank, suppress weeds and cover ground nobody was ever going to walk on. If you got the design plan in requirement 1, this is the part of it worth reading closely, because a designer who put a row of anything anywhere had a reason.
